Light and Life 70X7 and San Diego Area Knights of Columbus Culture of Life Give Thanks For Everyone Who Supported November 4th "Light and Life at St. Brigid" - and For the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Too!

Light and Life 70X7 and the San Diego Area Knights of Columbus thank the many parishioners from St. Brigid, St. Charles Borromeo, Our Mother of Confidence, Mary Star of the Sea and several other area churches and, especially, the good friends of our partner Rachel's Hope, who supported the Second Annual "Light and Life Evening of Giving Thanks," November 4th, at St. Brigid Parish Hall.  We honored Rosemary and Jim Benefield and the work of Rachel's Hope, and raised much needed funds for this very special healing ministry - which, we are happy to report, in recent month has gained especially welcome support through a dedicated "Project Rachel Chair" at the USCCB!

Light and Life 70X7, St. Brigid Culture of Life and San Diego Area Knights of Columbus Thank Everyone For Supporting Our August Events, "Light and Life at the Seashore - A Summer's Evening at Voulez Vous Bistro"  and  "Second Annual Light and Life Golf and Dinner Classic at Encinitas Ranch Golf Course."

We, all, were abundantly blessed with a beautiful evening of Light and Life at Voulez Vous Bistro, August 5, Monday, in support of the Opus 2 Mobile Ultrasound Initiative headed up by Pt. Loma Council.  Our Mother of Confidence Council and Grand Knight John Ohle led the effort, with support from Mary Star of the Sea Council and St. Brigid Council, to make this fun and purpose-filled event happen.  Special thanks go to Our Mother of Confidence Brother Knight Michel Malecot, and Christian Malecot, and their combined French Gourmet and Voulez Vous team, who underwrote the delicious Mahi-Mahi dinner, for their awesome generosity, hospitality and excellence, and Kim Brunson, Opus 2-partner Pregnancy Resource Center, Vista's, Executive Director, for her stirring talk.  So many area Knights and parishioners and, especially, our St. Brigid parishioners, extended themselves so generously.  We, all, are so very humbled by the goodness of so many.

Moving forward to the following week, August 12, Monday, the Second Annual Light and Life Golf and Dinner Classic, at Encinitas Ranch, put us over the top on the Opus 2 Mobile Unit.  As last year, the event was attended by people with a great love of God and his Creation. Encinitas Ranch is a beauiful venue for golf and dinner – and their team did a fine job as host.  The dinner and program was very special, with San Diego KofC Chapter President Hugh Largey, and Kim Regnier from PRC Vista, speaking about the Life Saving-Life Changing efficacy of mobile ultrasound - and, then, St. Brigid Brother Knight Mike Miller introducing good friends Phil and Mary Mickelson who shared with the group about their marriage and family life.  Our silent auction was great fun, with Brother Knight Michel Malecot's French Gourmet "Dinner for Eight" gift and the Catholic Answers books and DVD's and so many other really nice items.

"Phillip" Mickelson provided two of his signed Augusta National-Masters flags and Phil Rivers gave his signed helmet, jersey and football which, together, brought in over $3,000.

And the Grand Raffle Prize, a 46" Sony "Smart" television was won by, none other than, our own Fr. Devdas.

The wonderful bottom line is that Opus 2 is over the top - the platform is expected to arrive around the middle of October.

We thank all of you, here, at St. Brigid, Monsignor Steve Callahan, past GK Mike Campos and current GK Matt Kuczkowski, and Paul De Martini and Mark and Merv Payne, for your great servant-leadership in the continuing Light and Life 70X7 Initiative, as we thank all the Light and Life "players" from so many parishes and Knights of Columbus councils, too numerous to mention, all, for such wonderful help in making these most recent Opus 2 events wonderful successes.

You, all, are awesome! Merci beaucoup, Amis d' Lumiere et Vie !!

LIGHT AND LIFE AT ST. BRIGID AND AUCTION

With the overwhelming support of St. Brigid's parishioners, this first of our three development drive events was a great success in both attendance and fundraising.  With the super-organized help of Mary Lucena and the awesome 30's-40's Group, we served a sold-out crowd (on a Monday evening, no less!) delicious prime rib prepared by Mike and Peg Campos' super-talented son-in-law, Daniel Rumley, with over 200 St. Brigid parishioners dining, as well as additional guests from other parishes.  We, also, were joined by members of Catholics for the Common Good, as well as Knights, and Ladies, of Columbus from Santa Sophia, Our Mother of Confidence, All Hallows, KofC San Diego Chapter, KofC Balboa Assembly, Point Loma Council 3947 and, of course, our very own St. Brigid KofC Council 3487.

Monsignor Steve and Father Chris blessed the evening's activities (Father Chris proclaiming the "Happiest Day of My Life"), Brother Knight Rey Vinole and his band provided top-notch musical entertainment, and Camille Cassin, Executive Direcrtor from our initiative partner, Turning Point Pregnancy Resource Center, delivered a concise and poignant presentation, with an active Question & Answer period following.  The raffle and silent auction was very popular and active which added to a very enjoyable evening.  All together, the event will add over $12,000 to our Opus 1 initiative.

We, the COL Committee, are so very appreciative, and deeply joyful, for your strong response to this initial Light and Life event - not just in relation to attendance and fundraising but, especially, with respect to so many of you who believe, strongly, and experience great joy, in the just cause of Light and Life, and are willing to give of your time, talent and treasure.  We genuinely thank you, all, fellow parishioners, too numerous to mention, as well as the many family and friends from outside St. Brigid who joined us.  We extend special, and, we promise, abiding, thanks to Jim and Rosemary Benefield.  We thank, also, the many local businesses, especially the Albertson's and Ralph's grocery stores, and The French Gourmet Restaurant and Bakery, for their great support.  EVERYONE ... YOU ALL ROCK !

OPUS 1 LIGHT AND LIGHT EVENTS

Knights of Columbus and Saint Brigid Culture of Life heartily thanks everyone for supporting our fun and purpose-filled Opus 1 Light and Life events.  As you may recall, the Light and Life at St. Brigid Dinner, May 21, raised more than $12,000 - and the Golf and Fiesta Dinner Event, at Encinitas Ranch, August 13th, raised over $11,500 -  for the mobile ultrasound campaign.  Last Saturday's, September 8th, Prime Rib Dinner Gala and Auction, at Sheraton Carlsbad Resort, was especially well supported by St. Brigid parishioners - the event brought in close to $30,000 (!) ... and  one of our own St. Brigid parishioners is the happy winner of the Hawaiian Vacation raffle prize (!!).

Great thanks, again, everyone, for supporting the Light and Life Mobile Ultrasound Initiative.

Mobile Ultrasound Campaign Bringing ‘Light and Life’ to San Diego
Source: Southern Cross - August 2012

SAN DIEGO – No longer known only for their pancake breakfasts and Tootsie Roll drives, local Knights of Columbus councils are currently collaborating on a major pro-life campaign.

Through their new “Light and Life” initiative, local Knights of Columbus are working to deliver mobile Image Clear Ultrasound (ICU) units to qualified pregnancy resource centers. The centers will then be able to take their mobile ultrasound unit, housed in an RV, on the road to offer free services, including pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, throughout the county.   click here to read entire story . . .

Point Loma Council 3947 in San Diego raised $25,000 to purchase a new ultrasound machine for a mobile pregnancy resource center through the Knights of Columbus Ultrasound Initiative. The service travels throughout the area to provide free ultrasounds to pregnant women.

NEW ULTRASOUND MACHINE PRESENTATION
source:  Kof C State Newsletter  - April 2011

Those pictured were on hand to celebrate earlier this year with a gathering of over 60 supporters at Pregnancy Resource Center, Vista, and the latest San  Diego Knights of Columbus pro-life response to the 38th anniversary of the 1973 US Supreme Court’s infamous Roe v. Wade Decision. (That court’s decision has thus far resulted in the ending of over 52 Million innocent unborn babies’ lives in the name of "choice" in America).  San Diego Atty. and Sir Knight Stephen Beurele initiated the original local fund drive with other Catholic and non-Catholic pro-life Christians to raise the necessary first half of the $50,000 required for purchase and delivery of this state-of-theart Ultrasound which shows in great detail a living moving baby with its audible heartbeat in its mother’s womb early on after conception.

VISTA, CA (March 2011)  – A local crisis pregnancy center now has a new, state-of-the-art ultrasound machine, thanks to the Knights of Columbus.  A new 3D/4D ultrasound, which allows people to see an unborn baby in real time and hear the heartbeat, was dedicated Feb. 25 at Pregnancy Resource Center in Vista. The new machine was blessed by Jesuit Father Gil Gentile.

The ultrasound, which is being used onboard the center’s Image Clear Ultrasound (ICU) Mobile Pregnancy Center, was provided through the Knights of Columbus’ Ultrasound Initiative. Through the initiative, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus matches funds raised by local councils to purchase ultrasound machines for crisis pregnancy centers.

“Because the majority of pregnant women choose to keep their baby when they see an ultrasound image of the baby, we expect that by providing the latest, state-of-the art, 4D ultrasound machines to pro-life pregnancy centers, more pregnant women will decide to choose life for the babies,” said Steve Beuerle, a member of the Knights of Columbus, who serves as local coordinator for the Ultrasound Initiative.

The new ultrasound machine cost approximately $48,000. San Diego-area Knights raised about $25,000 in an ecumenical effort that included both Catholics and non-Catholic Christians. The Supreme Council contributed the remaining $23,000.

Ultrasound Manager Kim Regnier described the new ultrasound as “a wonderful addition” to the center. In 4D, she said, viewing the ultrasound image is “like watching a movie” with live footage of the baby sucking its thumb and grabbing its toes.

The ICU Mobile Pregnancy Clinic, which is housed in a 36-foot RV, began operating in 2008. It is capable of traveling throughout San Diego County to offer free services, including pregnancy tests and ultrasounds.

The new ultrasound machine is already saving lives, Regnier said. On Feb. 28, the first day it was used, a mother-to-be chose life after viewing an ultrasound of her unborn daughter and hearing the baby's heartbeat.

Beuerle hopes that San Diegans will consider donating their RVs to help create a fleet of mobile pregnancy centers, all equipped with 4D ultrasound machines and capable of meeting pregnant women where they are -- at Malls, on campuses and outside abortion clinics. He also aims to continue fundraising, with the hope of procuring more 4D ultrasounds for the San Diego area.

“According to Pregnancy Resource Center statistics, each ultrasound saves approximately 100 babies per year,” he said. “$25,000 is the amount we need to raise locally to receive matching funds from Supreme Knights for new 4D ultrasound. Thus, each $250 we raise saves approximately one baby per year.  “It is interesting to note that the $250 to save a baby is about half the $500 average cost for an abortion,” he added.

For more information, contact Steve Beuerle at scb@procopio.com or (619) 663-8853. Donations payable to "Knights of Columbus" can be sent to Beuerle at 525 B St., Suite 2200, San Diego, CA 92101
